Dry Macular Degeneration

Understanding Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration

What is Dry AMD? Dry AMD is a gradual deterioration of the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. It’s characterized by the presence of yellow deposits called drusen under the retina.

Symptoms to Be Aware Of

  • Gradual Loss of Central Vision: This can affect activities like reading, driving, or recognizing faces.
  • Blurred or Distorted Vision: Straight lines may appear wavy or objects might look distorted.
  • Need for More Light: Difficulty seeing in low light conditions.
  • Faded Colors: Colors might appear less vibrant.
  • It’s important to note that symptoms can be subtle and progress slowly.

What Causes Dry AMD? The exact cause is unknown, but factors like aging, genetics, smoking, and diet play a role. It’s more common in people over 50.

Stages of Dry AMD

  1. Early Stage: Small drusen and little to no vision loss.
  2. Intermediate Stage: Larger drusen and some vision loss.
  3. Advanced Stage: Very large drusen and noticeable vision loss.

Treatment and Management

  • Currently, there is no cure for dry AMD, but its progression can be slowed.
  • Nutritional supplements with antioxidants and zinc may help reduce the risk of progression.
  • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fish, can be beneficial.
  • Regular eye exams are crucial for monitoring the condition.

Prevention and Monitoring

  • Regular eye exams, especially if you are over 50 or have a family history of AMD.
  • Protecting your eyes from UV light and quitting smoking.
  • Using an Amsler grid at home to monitor changes in your vision.

Early detection and management are key to living with dry AMD. If you notice changes in your central vision or any other symptoms, please schedule an appointment with us for an evaluation.
